Extension Project for Stretching and Shrinking

When you complete your normal homework you can start the following project using the computer program Google Sketch-up.

You may have to install this from your Self Service.

Here is the introductory lesson

Here is a more challenging lesson.

Investiagtion 2.1 Mug Wump!

Students are currently graphing Mug Wump and his impostors on coordinate graphs.  They are investigating how a "rule" will change the dimensions of an original shape.  Some rules will allow the shapes to be similar and some will not.

Do you have any ideas which rules will change an image to be similar?

Use the following link to help you in plotting points on a coordinate graph.

Students creating rubber band stretchers.

Students used rubber bands to make scaled sketches in the first investigation.
Here are some pictures of them working.

Stretching and Shrinking Unit #3

Common Core Standards for this Unit:
  • 7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
  • 7.RP.A.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
  • 7.RP.A.2b Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
  • 7.RP.A.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.

Goals for this Unit:
  • Similar Figures Understand what it means for figures to be similar

- Identify similar figures by comparing corresponding sides and angles
- Use scale factors and ratios to describe relationships among the side lengths, perimeters, and areas of similar figures
- Use algebraic rules to produce similar figures
- Recognize when a rule shrinks or enlarges a figure
  • Reasoning With Similar Figures Develop strategies for using similar figures to solve problems
- Predict the ways that stretching or shrinking a figure will affect side lengths, angle measures, perimeters, and areas
- Use scale factors or ratios to find missing side lengths in a pair of similar figures
- Use similarity to solve real-world problems

Investigation 2.1 Notes

The focus question is: What is the size of each angle and the sum of all angles in a regular polygon with n sides?

The students will review what is important in a polygon and how regular and irregular polygons compare.  The goal is for students to develop formulas the sum of interior angles for a polygon of n sides.

S - Sum of all angles

S = 180 (n - 2)
when n = any number of sides of a polygon

A - measure of one angle

A = 180 (n - 2)/ n
ORA = 180 - 360/n
when n = any number of sides of a polygon

Investigation 1.5 - Drawing with a Ruler and Protractor

Focus Question: In a triangle, what measures of side length and angles give enough information to draw a figure?

Investigation 1.4 Notes and Vocabulary

Investigation 1.4

Important vocabulary:

  • supplementary angle - angles that add up to 180˚
  • complementary angle- angles that add up to 90˚

Here are the notes from today's class and the 1.3 and 1.4 homework.

Here is a sheet to help with benchmark angles.  This was given as a hard copy to all the students.

Investigation 1.3 and 1.4 - Estimating and Measuring Angles.

Focus Questions:
1. How would you estimate the measure of an angle?
2. How do you measure an angle with an angle ruler or protractor?

Today we looked at how to estimate angles using benchmark angles and also how to use a protractor and angle ruler to confirm an angle.

Here are some notes from today's Investigation 1.3

Investigation 1.2 - Angles and Rotation

Focus Question: What are some common benchmark angles?

Today students looked at the question, "What are some of the benchmark angles?"

Students were exposed to vocabulary words such as:
  • acute
  • obtuse
  • initial side
  • terminal side
  • degrees
  • right angle
  • straight angle

We ended by playing a connect four game.  Lets see if our students can defeat their parents!

Investigation 1.1 - Sorting Polygons

Focus Question: What properties do all polygons have?

Diving into polygons!

In the first section of Shapes and Designs, students spent time defining the characteristics of polygons. Ask your student, "What makes a shape a polygon?" These shapes have some specific properties!

Next, everyone got some hands-on time, looking at a variety of shapes and categorizing them. Most groups categorized the shapes by the number of sides they had, but then many expanded those further into sub-categories. How many different categories can there be for quadrilaterals (four-sided polygons)?

Here are some notes taken from Investigation 1.1.

Welcome back to 7th Grade Math with Mr. Cuthbert and Mr. Hagerty

Welcome back!
Our first Unit of Study will be:

We will cover the following Common Core Standards-

All Investigations - 7.EE.A.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related.

Investigation 2 - 7.EE.B.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

Investigation 2 -  7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.

Investigations 1, 2, and 3 -  7.G.B.5 Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in a multi-step problem to write and solve simple equations for an unknown angle in a figure.
